During Meet the Prof events you can network with communicative top-level international scientists visiting Kiel. Find out what they think are the top challenges in their field and what it takes to make a career in sciences.
“MEET THE PROF.“
Prof. Oded Beja, Ph.D.
Institute of Technology, Haifa 32000, Israel
08.10. 2009 | 09:00 - 11:00 h
Bioturm, Institute of Microbiologie, 1st Floor, Room 101
Environmental Genomics is a new emerging fi eld that enables us to look at parts of the ocean that were, until recently, masked to us. With present estimates suggesting that >99% of the microorganisms in most environments are not amenable to growth in pure culture, thus very little is known about their physiology and roles in the ocean. To illuminate the role of microorganisms in the open seas, Dr. Bejas lab is exploring the metabolism of planktonic bacteria and picoeukarya using novel molecular biology techniques, along with functional genomics and bioinformatics. His lab also focusses on the newly discovered proteorhodopsin family, looking into ecological diversity and adaptation of these proton pumps.
“MEET THE PROF.“
Prof. Margaret McFall-Ngai
University of Wisconsin, U.S.A.
08.07. 2009 | 14:00 h
Zoological Museum der CAU, Hegewischstraße 3
Margaret McFall-Ngai, professor of medical microbiology and immunology, works on the symbiotic associations between animals and prokaryotes. During her career she has amassed no less than 15 awards and honours – the Otto Scherbaum Award for Outstanding Research by a Graduate Student, the UCLA Graduate Woman of the Year, and an Award for Best Paper from the American Society of Zoologists are just three - all in the year in which she completed her PhD thesis!
Margaret McFall-Ngai will talk informally about her motivations in science and insights into success factors in an academic environment. Participants have a chance to speak personally to her, place questions and be inspired.
As inspired as, evidently, the 12 doctoral and 11 postdoctoral fellows under her tutelage, all of whom currently have positions in science.
This event is part of the International Workshop “Host- Microbe Interactions in Health and Disease” at which Prof. McFall-Ngai is an invited speaker.
“MEET THE PROF.“
Prof. Kiyokazu Agata
Kyoto University Global Center of Excellence, Japan
23.03. 2009 | 16:00 h
Zoological Institute, Am Botanischen Garten 1-4,
Room 417
In the first of a series of “Meet the Prof.” activities, Prof. Agata will give a brief introduction toresearch in Japan under the Cluster of Excellence(CoE) Programme “Formation of a strategic basefor biodiversity and evolutionary research: fromgenome to ecosystem“. He will then introduce hisefforts to promote a new stream of biodiversityresearch to PhD students in the CoE at the KyotoUniversity, and be open to questions of all sorts. For information on the Education Programme ofthe Kyoto Cluster of Excellence see: ethol.zool.kyoto-u.ac.jp/coe/eng/kyoiku.html
