Shipbuilding, Machinery & Marine Technology 2010

International Trade Fair in Hamburg (2010, 7 – 10 September)

The SMM in Hamburg is the world's leading shipbuilding and marine industries fair with more than 2,000 exhibitors, and 50,000 visitors. “Green” technologies, offshore engineering and ship financing were the keynote areas at this year’s international trade fair.

I visited the fair together with Prof. Ernst Flüh (GEOMAR). He introduced me to some trade representatives, most of them from Germany and some even from Kiel. That was interesting to see: there are many exciting companies in our region – potential industrial employers beyond the doctorate.

In the end of the day, the fair gave valuable insides on trends and possibilities within the maritime industry.

Martin Hieronymi is a PhD candidate in the Reserach Unit Maritime Meteorology at GEOMAR and studies the role of light fluctuations on physical, biological and chemical processes in the ocean . He studied Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering at the Technical University of Berlin before entering ocean sciences. His visit to the scientific fair took place as part of the "Messe Mentoring" Programme of the Integrated School of Ocean Sciences.
