PhD Programme

The Integrated School of Ocean Sciences (ISOS) is the multi-disciplinary educational platform for education in Ocean Sciences at the University of Kiel. ISOS is a platform of the Excellence cluster “Future Ocean” and not associated with a particular faculty. Participation in the ISOS PhD programme is voluntary and is restricted to candidates supervised (or co-supervised) by members of the Excellence Cluster, irrespective of the source of their funding. About 120 PhD candidates from several disciplines – all the natural sciences, law, economics, medicine and computer sciences take part in the programme and form a strong network of young researchers.

The PhD programme offers a wide range of academic, personal and financial support (see “ISOS at a Glance” below). It is not a rigid curricular degree course, but is intended to support Cluster scientists and their students to gain maximal benefit in their research and offer PhD candidates a multi-disciplinary, all-round education.

As a participant of the PhD programme you will have chosen to submit one thesis committee protocol per semester and to participate in a minimal amount of activity within the programme (see ISOS Introduction below). As incentives for active participation you may initiate courses on demand, access additional financial incentives for travel to conferences, to be mentored at scientific fairs and submit “miniproposals” for funding of self-driven research with your peers (see ISOS Offers at a Glance).

If you are interested in joining, please go through the information in the attachments below, talk to your advisors and send us the filled out application form. Call us personally to find out more.
