Capacity Building

The objectives of capacity building in the Cluster reflect the goals of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the ESSP-START (Earth System Science Partnership’s Global Change SysTem for Analysis, Research, and Training), leaders in developing an understanding of capacity building: longterm continual development using a country’s own human, scientific, technological, organizational, institutional and resource capabilities, to tackle problems related to policy and methods of development, while considering and respecting the potential, limits and needs of the people of the country concerned. Cluster members are involved in capacity building measures, in particular in Cape Verde, where topics of high societal relevance to the small island state are being addressed using the joint expertise of the Kiel Marine Sciences Network. At the same time, the conditions for scientific observation and research are being improved on a local level, which benefits both the citizens of Cape Verde and Cluster scientists.

UNESCO Chair in Marine Sciences

In 2011, the Cluster has begun to establish a concerted capacity building effort. A Kiel-based competition for the most promising capacity building efforts in countries developing their marine science capacities, such as TTR (teaching through research), Master student exchanges (one to two semester exchanges), PhD exchanges and summer schools and targeted research for local effect, will be supported with matching funds. During the project period, the principle investigatiors will be provided with the UNESCO/IOC chair in marine sciences for a 6 – 12 month period.

Information about the current call for the Future Ocean UNESCO/IOC Chair can be found here.
