ISOS Career Evenings

Last update: Dec 3rd

„Career Evenings“ provide young researchers (from Bachelors to PhD) with an opportunity to network personally with professionals from outside and within the University. Invited guests from industry, policy-making, nongovernmental agencies, and other key areas provide an overview of their work, and discuss their own career paths in the context of how they got there. Open, informal discussions are intended to foster personal contacts to young scientists at all stages of their careers.

Myths and Realities of Working in Science: Planning the path of your brilliant career

Anya Waite Ph.D.
University of Western Australia

Mon., December 7th, 17.00 hrs
IFM-GEOMAR westshore building, roof deck

Anya Waite, is professor of biological Oceanography at the University of Western Australia. She is currently in Kiel (with her family) on sabbatical at the IFM-GEOMAR. Prof. Waite went through the process of obtaining her degrees, and followed her PhD with a Post-Doc at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution – less well known are the years spent backpacking through 3 continents, and a low point where she actually considered going into dentistry! As a leading scientist with expertise in many fields, her own career is brilliant proof of her conviction that it is possible to have success in science and a well-balanced and joyful life.

Anya has gone through the process of doing top level science on a “40-hour week”, and found several “keys to success” that are based on understanding the system in which she works – its functioning, its culture, and its biases.  Make use of this career evening to discuss and question her hypotheses!
