Penny Chisholm is Professor of Biology and principal investigator of the Chisholm lab, a group of graduate students, post-doctoral associates, research scientists, research assistants and MIT undergraduates, focused on understanding the role of marine phytoplankton in the ocean‘s „metabolism“. The overarching goal of her lab’s research is to advance the understanding of the ecology and evolution of microbes in the oceans, and how they influence global biogeochemical cycles. In recent years they focused their attention on the cyanobacterium Prochlorococcus, the most abundant microbe in ocean ecosystems. They are developing Prochlorococcus and its phage as a model system for studying life across all spatial scales, from genomes to the biosphere, and across evolutionary and generational time scales hoping that by expanding systems biology across these dimensions for a single organism, they will develop a more unified understanding of life processes.Penny Chisholm will talk informally about her motivations in science and insights into success factors in an academic environment. Participants have a chance to speak personally to her, place questions and be inspired.
