November 19-22, 2008
St. Petersburg, Russia
Just a few words to the excellent workshop IMPETUS, that I could join due to the financial support of ISOS.
There was this meeting in winterly Saint Petersburg with the overall topic: Techniques in Polar Ocean Observation and Monitoring. 85 Participants from 20 nations, most of them PhD students or master students with backgrounds in marine geology, biology, oceanography, meteorology, engineering and other fields, made this workshop to the largest meeting of young researchers in the field of polar and ocean sciences ever.
It was the 3rd IMPETUS workshop located at the Russian Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute (AARI) and the German-Russian Otto-Schmitt Laboratory for polar and marine sciences, mainly organized by GEOMAR staff Heidemarie Kassens, Carolyn Wegner and Nicolas van Nieuwenhove – they have done an excellent job! The event was generously supported by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).
Lectures given by well-established Senior scientists, were trans-disciplinary and well understandable for everybody. My favorite talks were on:
Best thing in such events is – besides nice lectures of course – the poster session and thus possibilities to discuss one's own work, to see what others are doing in the same field, to get new ideas and to see aspects on your work you never thought on... To explain one's own work to outsiders, helps improving communication skills and to get to the point.
Here I use this forum to call attention to the great possibilities for junior researchers at the Otto-Schmidt Laboratory. Besides their interesting master program in applied polar and marine sciences (POMAR), they are offering a wide range of cooperations and for visiting scholarships. Do not hesitate to ask Heidemarie Kassens on it, she co-founded the Laboratory and afforded something great.
In the end of the day – it was a very good workshop with interesting people in a beautiful city. It's strongly recommended to join...
