ISOS gives you the opportunity to initiate and develop a small research project, preferably interdisciplinary in nature and in collaboration with other ISOS PhD candidates.
The project should be well defined, must be supplementary to your own work but with direct relevance to it, be discussed your advisors and should not be part of an existing, funded project.
You may apply for up to 5000 € for research, consumables, travel or other activities. Contact us if you are interested.
ISOS Miniproposal awarded to PhD Sven Hammann on the topic
"Developing Methods to analyze the physical surface characteristics of the combjelly Mnemiopsis leidyi"
ISOS PhD Miniprosal
Sven Hammann, Department of Zoology, CAU Kiel
Summary:
The project aims for the development of methods to prepare and fixate the surface of combjellys, in this case Mnemiopsis leidyi, for the further analyses of its physical characteristics. M. leidyi is a highly invasive species in the Baltic Sea and in other parts of the world. Some first results of the thesis of Sven Hammann (Thesis-Title: „How to control the symbiotic microbiota: Epithelial characteristics and symbiont/host interactions in a basal metazoan, the invasive combjelly Mnemiopsis leidyi (Ctenophora)“) suggest that the animals are able to avoid colonization of its surfaces. To understand the underlying mechanisms of that might help to develop biofilm resistant surfaces (technical aspects), can provide medical geared research and of course will also support the theses of Sven Hammann and Marie-Christin Klein (Thesis-Title: "Experimental analysis of micro-structural adaptations of ventral scales in snakes for friction minimization and anisotropy")
