Future Ocean at the Trade Fair Oceanology International in London
In 2010 the Cluster of Excellence "Future Ocean" exhibited for the first time at the OI Oceanology International in London. From 9th to 11th March 2010 over 500 exhibitors presented their new products and services at the world's largest fair for marine technologies. In addition to the conference, participants could also visit research and naval vessels at the fair.
The Cluster of Excellence presented a model of a high-resolution seismic 3D system at the Northern German Stand, organised by the Business Development Corporation of Schleswig-Holstein (WTSH GmbH). The model is used in measuring gas hydrate and liquid conveyance systems as well as for mapping slope instability and fault/fracture imaging. As opposed to exploration industry systems, here several short streamers are dragged along parallel to one another. The advantage of this alignment over other methods is that it can be used with mid-sized research vessels and is thus less expensive. In addition, this technology delivers almost double the resolution of other applications.
The working group Energy and CO2 Sequestration Technologies of GEOMAR presented the newly developed SIMPLE Piezometer monitoring system for monitoring the in situ pore pressure at slide prone slopes. Because flat slope slides belong to the greatest geological risk factors for coastal infrastructure, such as pipelines and communication equipment, monitoring of pore pressure points as potential catalysts is particularly important.
Beacon Projects
The six "beacon projects" (Cluster of Excellence "Future Ocean", Research and Technology Centre (FTZ), Society/ Association for Marine Aquaculture Ltd GMA, the Kiel Active Ingredient Center KiWiZ, the Fraunhofer Research Institution for Marine Biotechnology EMB and the Research and Development Center Kiel FH GmbH) are being supported within the framework of the Schleswig-Holstein initiative "Sea our Future" to strengthen the maritime profile of the state. To better use the synergies between these projects reciprocal introductions were carried out in 2009.
The Technology and Knowledge Transfer area of the Cluster, which is active at the intersection between science and industry, organised these events. The meetings included a short presentation of the institute after which current fields of research were illuminated by the presentation of a selected doctoral thesis followed by a visit at the institute. This series began with the presentation of the Cluster of Excellence "Future Ocean" and a visit on the research vessel Alkor.
