Organisation of the Cluster of Excellence "The Future Ocean"

Over one hundred Kiel scientists have united in the cluster "The Future Ocean", with the aim of investigating ocean change and re-evaluating both risks and potential. These experts represent diverse specialist areas, are already working in existing research groups, which are supplemented by fourteen junior research groups. They are looking at past, present and future changes to the oceans in even more depth, investigating marine resources and developing concepts for their sustainable use.

The Kiel cluster of excellence research conducted by the fourteen junior research groups focuses on two core topics:

1. Oceans in the Greenhouse World
2. Marine Resources and Risks

The Kiel scientists have recourse to technical and scientific support provided by infrastructure combined into four research platforms.

1. P1: Numerical simulation
2. P2: Isotope and traceranalysis
3. P3: Molecular biosciences
4. P4: Ocean observatories
